SHOW ME YOUR STETHOSCOPE and HEALTHY VILLAGES, INC. are partnering to bring a team of 10 nurses and nurse practitioners to remote villages in the Volta Region of Ghana. This mission will bring vitally needed medical interventions to poor villagers who could otherwise not afford care. In October 2016, a Healthy Villages – SMYS mission treated over 800 people. In October 2017, we will treat > 1000 people, as well as provide testing, treatment, and referral for public health concerns like TB, STIs and HIV.
This mission will be focused on women’s health, and will run in conjunction with another Healthy Villages, Inc. project to distribute 500 kits of washable and reusable sanitary products to poor girls and women in villages who have no access to disposable menstrual pads. We are partnering with another U.S. non-profit, Women To Be, for this effort. Women To Be has taken 2,000 kits to Nepal and Guatemala, and this will be their first such mission to the African continent. As part of this project, we will also be conducting informal classes to share information about menstruation, family planning, reproduction, and sexuality.
We expect to see at least 500 adolescent girls and women in the health mission clinic. We will be primarily focused on testing for pregnancy, STIs, HIV, and providing appropriate medications and referrals for continuing treatment to the Ghana Health Service. Women presenting with other (general) medical problems will also be served. Women will receive advice and counseling regarding their ob/gyn health needs.
· DATES: October 21 to November 4. (inclusive of date of departure from the U.S. & date of arrival back in the U.S.). · COST: In-country cost: $2,000. Flight cost: approximately $1,000 to $1,500. Pre-travel costs: approximately $250. Total cost: approximately $3,500 (does not include personal expenditures). A $200 non-refundable deposit will be required to secure your place on the mission. This will be deducted from your total cost. · ITINERARY: We will be based in Dogbekope Village, in the southeast corner of Ghana near the Togo border, about a four-hour drive east of Ghana’s capital, Accra. Lodging will be basic hotel accommodations in the nearest small town; meals will be catered local dishes. We will spend six full days in clinic. Every two days, we will rest and take in local sites of interest. Healthy Villages co-director Godfried Agbezudor is an expert in Ghana’s history and traditions and will provide you with a cultural orientation. · FUNDING: Participants will be expected to do their own fundraising to cover costs. We will provide you with ideas for how to go about it. Healthy Villages, Inc. is a U.S. 501c3 non-profit organization, and your expenses related to the mission are tax deductible. · TRAVEL: Healthy Villages co-director Sara Corry will assist with pre-travel planning. All in-country travel and mission organization will be taken care of by Healthy Villages. Sara and Godfried will be your hosts and will do their best to meet your needs.
$10,000/month, short contract 4-5 week positions for NP aboard Maritime ship. Position includes Stateroom and all meals.
Maritime Academy has openings for Family Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants to work on our training ship cruises this summer between late April and late July 2017. The ship will be traveling from Vallejo to El Salvador, Maui, Oahu, and Seattle.
The positions are about 4-5 weeks each, although 8-9 weeks positions are a possibility if preferred. The Training Ship Golden Bear (TSGB) summer cruises serve as a seagoing training and educational experience for the students at Cal Maritime and several other maritime academies as part of their preparation for entering maritime related careers.
Cruise 1 starts in Vallejo on 4/19/17 with ports in Sacramento, El Salvador, Maui, Oahu, and Seattle prior to returning to Vallejo on 6/21/17.
The open position of Cruise 2 starts in Vallejo on 6/21/17 with ports in El Salvador and ends in Maui on 7/22.
The sick bay team consists of a physician, an FNP or PA, and a counselor. Having previous ER or urgent care experience and an enjoyment of life at sea are both beneficial.
Nurse Practitioner - Required Education: Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) (academic degree or certificate preferred). Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty.
Required License and Certifications: Possess and maintain a valid California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Incumbents must also must possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate and a valid DEA number and certificate. ACLS required. .
Duties for the position include a scheduled workday of approx. 8am-5pm, and occasional after hours care for treatment of injuries or illness. The physician and NP/PA staff the sick bay and provide basic medical care for a crew of approximately 350 students, staff, and faculty. Other duties include routine student physicals.
There is usually ample time for reading and using the ship's gym. Time in port is split on and off duty with the physician. A private stateroom and meals are provided. Airfare to and from the departure and arrival ports is provided as needed. As this is a training ship for maritime academy students, lodging is available for the medical staff only.
Cruise and Background Check Requirements - A pre-cruise physical exam and drug screen is required to participate on the training cruise.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be satisfactorily completed before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

The Orthopedics/Neurology/Surgical (ONS) Unit is a 56 bed unit providing care for a wide range of adult patients and some adolescents. Most patient rooms on ONS are private and have a ceiling lift system in place for patient transfers. The patient population includes those with bone injuries, elective joint replacements, and trauma patients with orthopedic and other injuries. ONS also cares for general surgical patients including abdominal surgery, lung surgery, ear/nose/throat surgery, weight control surgery, and genitourinary surgery. Patients who have had brain or spine surgery, stroke patients, head injury patients, seizure patients, and patients with other neurological diagnoses may also be cared for in the unit. There is telemetry (heart) monitoring capability for 32 beds.
