Provides nursing services that require substantial specialized judgment and skill, is an advocate for the patient and patient’s family, and promotes safety. The planning and delivery of professional nursing care is based on knowledge and application of biological, physical and social sciences. RN’s utilize the nursing process to include assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and re-assessment to establish the plan of care. The RN’s duty to the patient is to provide safe, compassionate, and comprehensive nursing care. The RN will know and conform to the Texas Nursing Practice Act and the nursing board’s rules and regulations as well as federal, state, or local laws, rules or regulations affecting the nurse’s current area of nursing practice.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Promotes and implements measures to provide a safe environment for patients and others. • Knows the rationale for and the effects of medications and treatments. • Correctly administers medication and treatments. • Accurately and completely reports and documents patient’s status including signs and symptoms; nursing care rendered; physician orders; administration of medication and treatments; patient’s response to interventions; contacts with other health care team members concerning significant events regarding patient’s status. • Promotes and participates in education and counseling to patients and where applicable the family/significant other based on health needs. • Obtains instruction and supervision as necessary when implementing nursing procedures or practices. • Makes a reasonable effort to obtain orientation/training when encountering new equipment and technology or unfamiliar care situations. • Notifies the appropriate supervisory person when leaving a nursing assignment. • Knows, recognizes and maintains the professional boundaries of the nurse-patient relationship. • Complies with the mandatory reporting requirements of the Texas Occupational Code Chapter 301 (NPA), Subchapter I. • Provides, without discrimination, nursing services regardless of age, disability, economic status, gender, national origin, race, religion, health problems, or sexual orientation of the patient served. • Institutes appropriate nursing interventions required to stabilize a patient’s condition and/or prevent complications. • Clarifies physician orders if any question of accuracy or potential contraindications. • Makes assignments based on patient need and the experience, training and skill level of the person to whom the assignment is made. • Supervises nursing care (specific delegated tasks) provided by unlicensed persons and LVN’s and makes assignments based on educational preparation, experience, knowledge, and physical and emotional abilities. • Performs a comprehensive assessment of the patient; collects and documents the patient’s current health status and medical history. • Forms nursing diagnosis based on needs assessment. Develops and implements a plan of care based on assessment and nursing diagnosis. • Interacts professionally with the patient and family and involves patient and family in the formation of the plan of care.

• Demonstrates knowledge of developmental theory. Performs age appropriate focused assessment and provides safe and effective care to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient populations. • Documents, using medical terminology, and maintains a patient record that is legible, timely, accurate, legally acceptable, reflective of all nursing care provided and the patient's response to care given. • Adequately assesses and reassesses pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. • Evaluates patient’s status and response to nursing interventions and revises plan of care as needed. • Evaluates discharge planning needs re: patient/family education, equipment, home health. Facilitates the identification and resolution of patient’s discharge planning. • Responds appropriately and timely to patient care needs. • Calculates figures and amounts in computing doses of medications and IV fluids and calculates patient's weight in pounds and kilograms. • Responds to crisis in a calm, efficient manner, directing others concisely. • Responds promptly to changes in workload as necessary to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency. • Demonstrates the knowledge of proper identification and reporting medical/health errors. Promptly involves the proper hospital leaders in risk management situations. • Orients new staff members to the unit. • Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with procedures. • Maintains patient confidentiality. • Demonstrates clinical competence according to licensure and according to hospital/unit specific standards. • Meets the attendance policy standards. • Complies with hospital policies and procedures. • Complies with hospital/department Infection Control and Safety Policies. • Attends appropriate in-service, departmental meeting and mandatory in-services. • Performs other duties as assigned or requested within scope of practice.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience and Certifications) • Current Texas Registered Nurse license • BLS, ACLS and PALS required. Current BLS at time of hire; ACLS and PALS at time of hire or within thirty (30) days of hire. • Minimum two years of experience in hospital setting Graduation from high school or equivalent • Knowledge of Microsoft Office. • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to multi-task, utilize critical thinking skills, organize, determine priority of duties, some computer skills, effective oral and written communication skills, work independently, work with frequent interruptions, and manage stressful situations. Coordinates nursing care for assigned patients, participates in patient and family teaching and provides leadership; work cooperatively with ancillary, nursing and other patient care team members while maintaining standards of professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.
