Job Description

Responsible for direction of patient care in the behavioral healthcare setting.  Consults with staff, physicians and DON on nursing problems and interpretation of facility policies to ensure patient needs are met.  Provides nursing care through physical and mental assessments, laboratory testing, treatment plans and therapeutic treatments.  Knowledgeable of a wide range of disorders; cognitive, emotional, developmental, social and behavioral.  Performs crisis intervention.  Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in QAPI activities.  Responsible for overseeing the scheduling function for Nursing Department.  Assists the DON in formulating the budget.
REPORTS TO: Chief Nursing Officer or Director of Nursing
  • Current status as a registered nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, or a graduate of an accredited university with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (preferred).
  • Three to five years of staff management experience in a psychiatric setting.
  • Speaking: Able to articulate goals and objectives of the Center and to effectively present information to management, committees, staff, patients, families, and licensing and regulating agencies.
  • Hearing: Hearing acuity sufficient to perform job functions.
  • Vision: Normal visual acuity.
  • Writing: Excellent written communication skills needed to prepare reports, write policies and procedures, document in patient records, prepare agenda and minutes for department meetings and carry out Performance Improvement planning and monitoring.
  • Other: Problem solving, organizational, leadership, writing, crisis resolution, patient education, and basic computer skills.

  • Sufficient knowledge of Growth and Development in order to facilitate patients through the Development Tasks of Young Adulthood (i.e. Intimacy vs. Isolation), Middle Adulthood (i.e. Generativity vs. Stagnation) and Late Adulthood (i.e. Integrity vs. Despair).
The duties set forth below describe the general nature and level of work being performed by the Nurse Manager.  They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of the Nurse Manager since those duties include all tasks requested by the Director of Nursing or Medical Director to meet the needs of the Center. 
  • Assumes responsibility in cooperation with the DON for the administration of the nursing services.
  • Serves as a role model for quality clinical care.
  • Participates in the development, interpretation and implementation of the Center’s philosophy, objectives, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Participates in the budgeting process, maintaining a cost effective, quality clinical program within the Center.
  • Maintains clinical staffing patterns for the Center that address continuity of care and acuity.
  • Responsible for reviewing monthly nursing staff schedule and signing off on it.
  • Coordinates the Performance Improvement Program for clinical services within the Center.
  • Strives to strengthen the role of the nurse in the Center milieu.
  • Supports an environment conducive to professional growth.
  • Investigates unusual incidents and complaints from patients, personnel and other departments and reports to the CNO/irector of Nursing.
  • Makes rounds at the Center daily as needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining a therapeutic milieu and assuring that unit staff maintain patient rights, the nursing process, safety, and patient participation in their own care.
  • Possesses current BLS/CPR certification; proficient in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
  • Participates in staff development programs and orientation of new employees and communicates staff education needs to CNO/Director of Nursing; insures nursing staff maintain staff development program expectation.
  • Participates in intra-departmental activities directed at improving communication, coordination and quality of patient care.
  • Takes call after hours for unit issues on a rotating schedule according to the monthly calendar.
  • Manages the clinical orientation of new staff nurses as follows:
    • Appoints the Charge Nurse or a specific designee to act as primary clinical preceptor.
    • Responsible for preparing all pertinent staff on the unit for new staff nurse training expectations and support required to assist and incorporate new staff nurses.
    • Assures completion of department orientation and competency assessments for new orientees.  Evaluates orientee at completion of department orientation and sends documentation to Human Resources for inclusion in employee file.
  • Assumes responsibility for the successful integration of professional staff.
  • Plans and provides for department in-service presentations on a regular basis.
  •           Assures completion of Performance Evaluations for staff in writing on a yearly basis.
  • Coaching and teaching staff on an ongoing basis, for nursing skills development, providing feedback and disciplinary action when needed.
  • Delegates duties as necessary to nursing management.
  • Conducts regular nursing and other milieu meetings.
  • Performs other duties in a willing manner or as requested by the CNO/DON, including assisting the Charge Nurse, Staff Nurses, LPNs, MHTs and other non-professional staff, as required.
