General Summary / Overview
The Elliot Lewis Center is hiring a clinical assistant to work directly with patients in a clinical setting.  The Center offers comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to MS patients, and their families and caregivers, in a warm and personalized setting. The Elliot Lewis Center is comprised of three physicians, a clinical nurse, an infusion nurse, a social worker, two research coordinators, two administrative assistants, and Jackson and Tiger, our MS service dogs. The Center is hoping to find someone with a substantial interest in medicine and a desire for a strong, clinical experience.

The assistant will meet with patients on arrival, take vital signs and BMI, record a medication list, take a patient history and review of symptoms, and perform standardized MS-specific functional testing. He or she will assist with insurance prior authorizations, prescriptions, various administrative work, and patient support and communication. The assistant will be responsible for lab work; phlebotomy skills are a must. Additionally, the assistant will participate in daily multidisciplinary team meetings and work directly with nurses and physicians.

This position is a terrific opportunity to learn about multiple sclerosis and the practice of clinical neurology.  It provides excellent exposure to a clinical practice, as well as a firm foundation in basic clinical skills, including the development of sound clinical judgment and the ability to consolidate information and synthesize a clinical problem. The ability to work well with a team is a requirement, and strongly motivated individuals are sure to have a valuable experience. Some clinical experience is preferred.  Job requires a 2 year commitment.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities
• Administer functional testing for patients
• Assure patient medical record is complete prior to visit
(records of lab results and MRI have been received)
• Order, draw and process lab work (phlebotomy skills required)
• Ensure lab results are received and filed appropriately
• Assist with prescriptions and insurance prior authorizations

The RN is responsible for directing, monitoring and evaluating the care delegated to non-licensed personnel. As a member of the interdisciplinary care team, the RN works collaboratively with the other members to assure the safe and accurate delivery of care. In addition, the RN performs a range of technical services in a cross-functional mode to comprehensively serve patient needs. Assumes, under the direction of the Laboratory, responsibility for patient specimen testing, quality control, quality improvement, and equipment maintenance.

Qualifications/Specifications:

  • Education: Graduate of a nursing program.
  • Licensure/Certification: Registered Nurse with current state licensure or licensure from a state with the Nursing Compact. BLS certification required within 30 days of hire. Successful completion of AHA approved course in ACLS within one year of employment required for all nursing areas. PALS or ENPC certification required for Emergency Room nurses within one year of employment.
  • Experience: Minimum of one-year adult, acute care with cardiology/cardiovascular nursing preferred.

Our clients are primarily elderly people who prefer to remain in their home as opposed to health facilities or institutions. 

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

Client Care:
• Completes an initial assessment of client and family to determine home care needs. Provides a complete physical assessment and history of current and previous illness(es).
• Regularly re-evaluates client needs.
• Initiates the plan of care and makes necessary revisions as client status and needs change.
• Uses health assessment data to determine nursing diagnosis.
• Develops a care plan which includes the client and the family in the planning process.
• Counsels the patient and family in meeting goals and related needs.
• Provides home care instructions to the client as appropriate per assessment and plan.
• Identifies discharge planning needs as part of the care plan development and implements prior to discharge of the client.

Communication:
• Performs supervisory home visits to each personal care client's residence at least every 62 days, and at least every 92 days for companion/sitter clients. 
• Communicates with the physician, if necessary, regarding the client's needs and reports any changes in the patient's condition; obtains/receives physician's orders as required.

Supervision:
• Annually assesses the performance of CNA supervisees through either direct observation or demonstration of the tasks they are assigned to perform
• Perform supervisory assessments at client homes to review and document (1) client's condition (2) vital signs (3) a review of client progress (4) any client problems (5) the appropriateness of the current level of services, and (6) the client's satisfaction with the services provided

Position Qualifications:
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. One to two years of recent acute care experience in an institutional setting is desirable.
