Montana State Hospital (MSH) is a 209 bed state psychiatric hospital located in Warm Springs, Montana. MSH is the only state hospital in Montana. The Hospital averages 600 admissions per year. Procedures for hospital admission are specified in state law. Montana State Hospital is located in the Deer Lodge Valley between Butte and Missoula. This location is ideal for individuals or families seeking to locate in a smaller community with good schools. Easy access to local airports and the interstate freeway system make travel convenient. Nearby outdoor recreation opportunities abound and include hiking, downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, golf, rafting, kayaking, and wildlife watching.

**Registered Nurses earn additional differential pay of $2.00 per hour for evening shifts and $1.50 per hour for weekend shifts. **

Montana State Hospital provides acute care psychiatric inpatient treatment for adults with serious mental illness. This position performs nursing assessment, planning, interventions, and evaluation for adult clients in the facility. Responsibilities include assigning work and providing direction and training to subordinate nursing personnel.

Major Duties or Responsibilities:

A. Patient Care

• Admits patients to the hospital in accordance with state statutes and hospital policies.

• Completes and records initial and subsequent nursing assessment of each patient’s physical and mental status according to hospital format and policy using interview, observation skills, and physical assessment techniques and communicates findings verbally and/or via written documentation.

• Provides, structures, and maintains a therapeutic environment in collaboration with the patient and other members of the healthcare team.

• Intervenes during psychiatric emergencies/patient crisis using nonverbal, verbal, physical, and mechanical techniques in accordance with hospital policy.

• Authorizes restriction of patient rights in accordance with hospital policy when such restrictions are necessary to achieve treatment goals.

• Assists physician with diagnostic procedures, treatment regimes, and patient examinations according to standards of practice.

• Responds to medical emergencies using skills of rapid assessment; directs and provides emergency interventions in order to stabilize patient’s condition.

• Participates with providers in developing a patient plan of care and acts to implement as directed.

• Receives and transcribes verbal and written provider’s orders according to established policy standards to ensure accurate treatment of patients.

• Administers medications and medical treatments as prescribed.

• Evaluates and communicates verbally and via written documentation patient's response to interventions in relation to established measurable goals and objectives in order to revise baseline data, nursing diagnosis, and treatment interventions.

• Updates plan of care based on nursing assessment which identifies specific measurable goals, objectives and interventions in accordance with hospital policies and state law to ensure individualized treatment.

• Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary hospital treatment team and community mental health team in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs/activities to ensure appropriate individualized treatment services.

• Coordinates and provides individual and group counseling based on standards of nursing practice.

B. Charge Nurse Duties

• Assigns and directs the nursing care provided for each patient on a daily basis through the use of written schedules, work assignments, and oral communication to ensure compliance with individual treatment plans.

• Authorizes, monitors, and accurately documents the use of restraints and seclusion based on sound clinical judgment in accordance with hospital policy to ensure the provision of patient safety, dignity, and least restrictive environment.

• Provides direction to staff related to performance, guidance, and implementation of hospital policy.

• Provides direction to nursing care nursing staff to include Licensed Practical Nurses, Resident Care Aides, and Special Duty Aides.

• Teaches basic medical and psychiatric nursing skills and interventions, as well as hospital policies and procedures to treatment program personnel utilizing formal and informal teaching techniques to promote knowledge and skill development.

C. Professional Development

• Contributes to the development standards related to patient care and nursing procedure through participation on hospital committees and assigned task groups.

• Participates in professional development activities and continuing educational programs to ensure currency in nursing practices and trends.

• Adheres to the nurse practice act of Montana and all laws and rules governing the practice of registered nurses in order to maintain high standards of care and current licensure.

Physical and Environmental Demands: Professional Clinical, Medical, and Nursing Services positions primarily work on treatment units and in a clinic setting. These positions are involved in the treatment of persons who pose unpredictable and physically aggressive behavior requiring staff intervention and possible risk of injury to staff. Employees in these positions may be expected to assist with patient crisis interventions. These positions are also involved in the evaluation and treatment of persons with histories of serious criminal acts. Training in hospital approved intervention techniques and Mental Health Professional Person Certification are required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of nursing, medications, and treatment planning.

• Knowledge of patient’s rights regarding medical treatment.

Patient experience will be enhanced by consolidating services to the Menino side of the campus, expanding our Emergency Department, modernizing surgical suites, and offering patients and staff the most efficient clinical care spaces possible.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • One year of experience as a working and licensed Registered Nurse.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an Associate’s degree or Baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN). BSN preferred.
  • Candidates who do not have a BSN must be enrolled in a Baccalaureate program within 6 months of hire and must complete their BSN within 36 months of hire.
  • Registration and current RN licensure in the state of MA in good standing required.
  • 12 Months of Critical Care experience is REQUIRED.
  • Requires current basic life support (BLS) certification. Some units may require Advanced Cardiac Life support (ACLS) certification
  • Additional certifications may be required for certain practice area.
  • Willingness to work every other weekend.

FRESENIUS MEDICAL CARE

Pay Rates: Your pay rate will change depending on location of each assignment.  Below is a typical range of hourly pay rates per discipline.   
  • RNs:  approximately $28 – $34 per hour
(Charge Nurse and Clinic Manager positions will pay additional per hour)
 
Meals and Incidentals/Per Diem Stipend:
  • Stipends typically range from $510-$740 bi-weekly; depending on location
 
Housing:
  • You will be offered a fully furnished one bedroom, one bathroom with housewares and basic utilities.  (You will be able to make and pay for your own arrangements beyond basic utilities such as internet, cable etc.)
  • In lieu of Fresenius offered housing, you may opt to receive a tax free housing stipend. Typical housing stipends range from $830-$1,000 bi-weekly; depending on location.
  • If your housing accepts Pets, you will be responsible for Fees, Deposits, Rent etc. associated with any Pets as Fresenius is does not cover these costs.
 
Qualifying for ALL Stipends:
  • You must work a minimum of 20 hrs/wk for each working week to receive stipends.
  • You must work an assignment that is a minimum of 50 miles from permanent tax residence.  If you have a permanent tax residence – housing and meals per diems are nontaxable
  • If you do NOT have a permanent tax residence – housing per diem will be taxed and you will not qualify for a meals stipend per diem.
  • A  Perm Resident Form must be completed when signing your contract to be sure you have met qualifications to receive non- taxable stipends. 
 
Travel Arrangements:
  • Travel is reimbursed $.54/mile to and from assignment and to a max $1,000 ($500 each way)
  • Mileage Reimbursement is paid separately through our Accounts Payable department via expense report(s).
  • If you wish to fly to your assignment FMC will make arrangements for you.  Rental car costs are not reimbursed for any reason.
     
    ****Payroll and Stipends are processed and paid bi-weekly****

Health Insurance: The Travel division offers Medical, Dental and a Vision Assistance Plan. 
  • You will be eligible for benefits after working 30 days
  • Benefits will always start at the first of a month.  You must be working to continue coverage

PTO:  RN must work a minimum of 36 hours per week to receive PTO accruals.  PTO accrues at 3.08 hours each week (essentially 40 hours of PTO every 13 weeks).
 
Paid Training
You will be required to attend full FMC training for your very first assignment only.  The training will be 1-2 weeks.  Your contract end date may be extended 1-2 weeks while you are in the initial FMC training.
