Honduras 7-14, 2019 ,
14-11-2019
This will be IMR’s 2nd visit to Honduras, a country known for its natural beauty and extreme poverty, with more than 50% of the population destitute. Major risk factors include high unemployment and inadequate public education. Many schools have up to 80 children in a classroom with one teacher. Of all the children entering 1st grade, only 30% are still in school by 6th grade and only 8% continue to the university level. Health care is almost nonexistent in the rural areas of the country where your IMR team will work. The towns where we will care for patients have a high prevalence of diseases transferred by mosquitoes such as malaria, dengue, and recently chikungunya, especially during the months right after rainy season. Due to the lack of clean water and sanitation methods diseases such as skin rashes/ infections, ear, eyes, nose and throat infections, respiratory infections, influenza, heartworm, and diarrhea are seen daily in adults and children. Oral hygiene is nonexistent and dental care is of critical importance. These are health issues you can significantly impact through excellent patient care and health education. Please join us!

There is one doctor for this town and the surrounding communities and most of the provided services for care require payment for services. Patients, seen on a walk-in basis, start lining up at 4 am. If they are not among the first in line, they will probably not be seen that day. The small hospital in the area also has small resources, is a car ride away, and is for private pay patients only. Your IMR team is their hope for the health of the children in this town. The radio, posters, and word of mouth will all be used to tell everyone that we are there. However, the town has determined that the real way to spread the news is through the school children. Every school child will receive a letter to take home, outlining the day and location of our team. The churches will announce our visit and ensure that even the homebound know that we will come to them. Home visits are some of the best medicine we provide and some of the most fun for our team! Expect a crowd; there will be no shortage of patients here. Doctors, dentists, nurses, EMS, counselors, and non-medical staff are all needed; OB-GYNs, Dermatologists, Pediatricians, and Pediatric Dentists are in especially high demand. The local doctor is fully supportive of our visit and will collaborate with us to care for those patients with chronic illness such as hypertension and diabetes.
IMR Trinidad and Tobago Nov 1-8,2019 ,
3-10-2019
Come and join the IMR team as we continue our work with our Trinidadian and Tobagonian partners to help improve the quality of life for this incredible nation. Upon arrival, the locals will proudly welcome you with their bright, Caribbean spirit. During your visit, you will enjoy authentic cuisine that is comparable to Creole, but made with local, bold spices.

While both islands are known for their magnificent beaches and mountain views, Trinidad’s is home to boisterous carnivals and calypso music while the smaller Tobago boasts a Forest Reserve that provides a haven for many species of bird. No matter which island you are one, you can embark on incredible snorkeling trips, see old pirate bays, and explore sunken ships and reefs.
In Trinidad and Tobago, there are not enough healthcare providers or facilities to serve the population.  While the island does have health centers, many are understaffed and undersupplied and although though most of the existing healthcare services are free, patients are frequently unable to obtain care, even on an emergency basis. To help provide quality medical care to all citizens, IMR sends volunteers to remote areas of the country to provide quality health care and medical services. Our mobile clinics offer assistance to children, women, families, the elderly, and other in-need populations.

You and the rest of the volunteer team will educate locals on how to stay healthy and how to care for their loved ones. Together, we will treat a wide variety of acute and chronic illnesses including dengue fever, hepatitis, malaria, pneumonia, and digestive diseases. However, one of the major focuses of this mission is dentistry. Because all community members are encouraged to attend, demand for dental care will be high. Another focus of this mission is women’s healthcare. We will provide general women’s and infant care, as well as strengthen the knowledge and skills of the local midwives. We expect a high patient load in the highly populated slum communities we will be serving in. With 1.2 million people and a population density of 266 per sq. km, and only 1 doctor per 1,000 people, our services are needed!

Our patients are the highlight of every IMR mission!  Quality of life has been compromised for many island residents, but Hypertension, Diabetes, TB, and HIV are treatable, and you will be directly responsible for positively changing the lives of these patients!

While the most rewarding aspect of this trip will be caring for the people of Trinidad and Tobago, your team will also have the opportunity to visit some of the country’s top destinations. Since this is one of the most beautiful places in the world, you will experience mouth-watering cuisine, stunning white-sand beaches, and local marine life.
Guatemala Oct 5-12, 2019 ,
5-09-2019
Imagine waking up surrounded by 3 volcanoes with the smell of pan (bread) baking in old ovens and the song of the local birds as they welcome the sunrise.  If that's what you are imagining, you must be in La Antigua, a small city in south central Guatemala known for its colonial and Spanish baroque architecture, active and dormant volcanoes, multicolored buildings, secret doorways and warm people. It has also been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is where you will be based during the week as you travel out to areas where medical care is scarce and dental care is almost non-existent.  Please join us as we care for the people of Antigua, many of whom suffered greatly during the 2018 volcanic eruptions that left many families without their loved ones and  villages covered in ash.

Clinics will take place in the beautiful valleys around La Antigua and in schools and orphanages near the city.  Many of your patients will come from the indigenous tribes in the areas; others will have been greatly affected by the most volcano and those in the not so distant past.  This area has seen great hardship and great loss and your team will make a tremendous difference in your patient's life.  You will have the opportunity to provide medical care, dental care, and health and hygiene education to hundreds of patients during the week - are you up for the challenge?  Your reward will be the hugs and laughter of the children and the shy smiles of their parents as they thank you for caring enough to help their families.

The team will be staying in a simple, safe, clean and friendly hotel located in this beautiful city where you can enjoy the local food, music, and an array of shops.   Tour the Chocolate Museum, where you will learn how to make chocolate from the bean! Everything is within walking distance and the city is full of color, wonderful smells, and amazing food. . The culture of Guatemala will come alive as you explore the city after clinic and during your day off.

Upon your arrival in Antigua, all  transportation to clinic has been arranged for you.  Professional drivers, safe vehicles, and security are some of the many reasons to join IMR on a trip.  Don't nap - there's a lot to see in the valleys and hills surrounding your home away from home this week!

Testimonials

This website is fantastic! Mother of a Special Needs Child.

"I am a Registered Nurse and the mother of a special needs daughter. I have used Hirenurses.com to hire a competent CNA/Nurse to care for my 9 year old special needs daughter. The website is fantastic and has put us in touch with several people to help fill some of our PCA hours. It is such a relief knowing there is a place to go to look for competent and compassionate medical professionals to care for complex and vulnerable loved ones."
