Scope of Practice

Position Summary:
The position will provide for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care to the patients; assist the Medical Director and other providers in the development and maintenance of standards consistent with the level of care set by the selected accrediting agency process.  Provide direct nursing care when needed.  Functions within the framework of the California Nurse Practice Act.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. In cooperation with the Medical Director, develop, review, revise and implement the philosophy, goals, objectives, policies and procedures of the Medical Department consistent with Organizational philosophy, goals and objectives.
  2. Responsible for the planning and supervision of the daily operations of the Medical Clinic in relation to the patient flow, triage, telephone triage, walk-ins, emergencies and other patient needs.
 
  1. Assist the Medical Director in the coordination of the physicians, mid-level practitioners, laboratory services, pharmacy services, and other ancillary personnel activities and schedules at all program sites.
 
  1. Schedule all medical department staff to include working days, hours, vacations and holidays.  Responsible for verification and signing of all medical department personnel time sheet.
 
 
  1. In the absence of certified laboratory and/or pharmacy personnel, assists medical director in the management of all laboratory and pharmacy services rendered on site in compliance with applicable regulation, policies /procedures and established standards of quality control.
 
  1. Maintains a current inventory, initiates the requisitions for all medicines, solutions, supplies and equipment in accordance with established policies/procedures.
 
  1. Develop and maintain on going maintenance and calibration schedule for all equipment
 
  1. Establish and maintain open and effective communications with all members of the health care team and administrative personnel.
 
  1. Maintain ongoing performance evaluation, guidance and development of personnel of the nursing, office and records staff in accordance with all applicable regulations and policies of the licensing agencies and Organization.

  1. In the absence of a pharmacist, assist providers in monitoring patient’s= medication compliance; checks all refill requests for timeliness of refills; schedules return clinic visit appointment when necessary.
 
  1. Responsible for establishing and maintenance of standards of cleanliness, infection control and organization within the medical clinic area in compliance with OSHA requirements.
 
  1. Maintains an on going program of Quality Control Management for the Medical Department in accordance with accrediting agency and Organization policies.

  1. Assist the health records staff in the monitoring of charts for;   completeness of documentation utilizing the SOAP format; neatness and legibility; signature and title of provider, and date of service; status of written orders for medications, tests etc. and tracking of patient eligibility for outside services.
 
  1. Provide and assist other staff with patient education for chronic illnesses, obesity and other areas as needed.  Make referrals to CPSP for pregnancy care; out side health services and testing after determining patient eligibility for CHS and after approval of CHS Committee.
 
  1. Determine that clinic is closed, locked, and alarm set each night.
 
  1. Make referrals to appropriate in house services when needed.
 
  1. Meet deadlines for duties and assigned projects in a timely manner.
 
  1. Participates in continuing education on a regular basis, to enrich skills and knowledge, to provide progressive professional development and maintain certification.
 
Qualifications:
 
  1. Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.  Preferably with a Bachelor=s degree.
 
  1. Current licensure by the California State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.
 
  1. Minimum of five (5) years experience as a RN, including two (2) years of ambulatory outpatient experience.
 
  1. One (1) year of supervisory experience.
 
  1. Possess a current CPR card.
 
  1. HIV pre/post test counseling certification helpful.
