The positions are about 4-5 weeks each, although 8-9 weeks positions are a possibility if preferred. The Training Ship Golden Bear (TSGB) summer cruises serve as a seagoing training and educational experience for the students at Cal Maritime and several other maritime academies as part of their preparation for entering maritime related careers.

Cruise 1 starts in Vallejo on 4/19/17 with ports in Sacramento, El Salvador, Maui, Oahu, and Seattle prior to returning to Vallejo on 6/21/17.

The open position of Cruise 2 starts in Vallejo on 6/21/17 with ports in El Salvador and ends in Maui on 7/22.

The sick bay team consists of a physician, an FNP or PA, and a counselor. Having previous ER or urgent care experience and an enjoyment of life at sea are both beneficial.

Nurse Practitioner -
Required Education: Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) (academic degree or certificate preferred). Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty.

Required License and Certifications: Possess and maintain a valid California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Incumbents must also must possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate and a valid DEA number and certificate. ACLS required.
.

Duties for the position include a scheduled workday of approx. 8am-5pm, and occasional after hours care for treatment of injuries or illness. The physician and NP/PA staff the sick bay and provide basic medical care for a crew of approximately 350 students, staff, and faculty. Other duties include routine student physicals.

There is usually ample time for reading and using the ship's gym. Time in port is split on and off duty with the physician. A private stateroom and meals are provided. Airfare to and from the departure and arrival ports is provided as needed. As this is a training ship for maritime academy students, lodging is available for the medical staff only.

Cruise and Background Check Requirements -
A pre-cruise physical exam and drug screen is required to participate on the training cruise.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be satisfactorily completed before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.
